About Surosa Cycles
SUROSA CYCLES (formerly Oldham Cycle Centre) was established in 1983 by Ken Barlow, father of then international Bob, who took over the business in 1998. The business was around for many years before and was originally founded by Derek (Nobby) Clarke.
The shop now SUROSA CYCLES and owned by former World Champion Mandy Jones and her husband Nigel Bishop, stocks all styles of bike from mountain bikes to specialist lightweight road bikes and equipment for road racing, time trial, track, audax, touring and triathlon.
The shop has a very good reputation not only in the UK, but also with many overseas customers, who receive the same high quality service and attention to detail expeirienced by the shop customers.
Whilst operating a mail order service, we are primarily a retail shop with a first class workshop equipped with the latest modern tools and know-how to prepare and repair bikes to the highest standards. Let us pass on our experience next time you want a new bike. Why take chances with 'bikes out of boxes' when you can get the right size/fit, plus the exact components? Meet the Team
All driven by one single factor – we're passionate about bikes. You'd be forgiven for thinking that we don't get out much and spend our time drooling or debating over the latest equipment (for debating read arguing), but not so – we're passionate about riding them, fixing them and experimenting with them in their various forms. So if you're now thinking what makes you the right people to look after my pride and joy, then read on ... Mandy Jones (Now Mandy Bishop)
What Mandy hasn't done on a bike isn't worth doing. Her dad forced her to ride fixed gear as a kid, made her ride time trials and insisted she go on Youth Hostel weekends with the club. Like all youngsters she rebelled and squandered her teenage years to the extent that by the age of 20 she was not only a multi-discipline National champion, but had taken the Ladies World 5000m record and was Ladies World Road Race Champion.
Not satisfied with these achievements she took some time out to have a family, emulated her father by dragging poor Sam (her son) around Europe on a kiddie seat on the back of a tandem, before making a racing come back and winning even more gold medals… Finally retiring due to an injury sustained whilst mountain biking, Mandy is more than happy to pass on words of advice and encouragement to anyone on a bike... Robert Porter (the rider formerly known as Bob!)
Hiding away from the light, usually in the deepest darkest corner of the workshop is a modest man of great talent and knowledge. Only ever known to reveal his true cycling heritage under duress, Robert has nevertheless achieved more in his cycling career than belies his mild manner. A national champion at 100 miles, 100km Team Time Trial champion and the accolade of British Best All Rounder Robert was no stranger to success. He later went on to ride as a professional for Falcon. His passion for bikes is unsurpassed and he is our very own Sheldon Brown in the making... Aran Iolo Cook
Our very own Bob The Bike Builder – Can he fix it? Yes he can! And he can build it and ride it and break it...
Trials rider and YouTube Guru, Aran is the puppy of the team with aspirations of being top dog. Already a seasoned demo rider with the MADD demo team Aran also does a mean line in home style YouTube street riding videos when not out on the town (literally). With a passion for bikes and bitz Aran brings a young and energetic dimension to the team as well as a his champion qualities - 2006 Expert British Biketrial Champion. Nigel Bishop
With a varied cycling background Nigel is a bikie to the core. Growing up in Yorkshire he was a CTC member and the first glimpse of his competitive nature came through when he won the junior British Cycle Tourist Competition title. He started racing at seventeen progressed through the Junior ranks and as a Senior won the Tour of the Borders, came fourth in the National Road Race champs and was suddenly spotted and selection for his first GB international swiftly followed. Nigel rode for several years at International level including the World Championship Road Race, the highlight of his career was holding the Yellow Jersey in 1989 Milk Race (now Tour of Britain).
Once racing was finished there was time to do 'normal' things and Nigel & Mandy married in 1993 followed by the arrival of the apple of his eye, daughter Rebecca 1994 (although now she is a teenager he is wondering what he let himself in for).
Nigel is the shaker and mover in the team-or so Mandy says-especially when he has too much coffee!
His knowledge and passion for all things cycling is extensive so if you need to talk techy stuff he is your man.
